In the early 1980s, high in the mountains of Nepal, the seed was planted for what is now Eye Care Foundation. Ophthalmologist Gerard Smith, together with colleagues, witnessed how thousands of people were becoming unnecessarily blind or visually impaired due to a lack of eye care. What started as a small-scale eye camp grew thanks to dedicated doctors, volunteers, and donors into an international organisation that has been making eye care possible worldwide for decades.
In this video, our founder Leendert Parlevliet and ophthalmologist Marilette Teske-Stehouwer share why this work is still so urgently needed. They speak about the importance of good eye care and why access to vision is a basic right, no matter where you live.
