On October 10, 2024, people around the world came together to mark World Sight Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of eye health and the need for vision care.
This year’s theme, “Love Your Eyes,” was embraced globally, with events, campaigns, and initiatives taking place in many countries to promote eye health and fight preventable blindness.
Here’s a recap of how different nations celebrated and took action on World Sight Day 2024.
Netherlands: Fundraising for Cataract Surgery

In the Netherlands, the Eye Care Foundation launched a campaign to raise funds for cataract surgeries. For just 42 euros, one cataract surgery could restore sight to someone in need. The campaign included radio ads featuring ambassador Toine van Peperstraten and a social media push to spread the message.
Cambodia: Focusing on Children’s Eye Health

Cambodia marked World Sight Day with an event under the theme “Love Your Eyes, Kids.” Around 200 people attended, including government officials, eye care professionals, and NGOs. The event emphasized the importance of eye health for children and the need for early detection and treatment.
Laos: New Clinic for Children

In Laos, a new pediatric eye care clinic opened in celebration of World Sight Day. Dr. Khamkhoune Holanouphab, Director of the National Ophthalmology Centre, noted that women and children are at higher risk for vision problems. The clinic will provide specialized care for children with eye issues.
Tanzania: Eye Screening for Schoolchildren

In Tanzania, about 2,000 schoolchildren in Malinyi, Mlimba, Ifakara, and Ulanga received eye screenings. The children were also educated on how to take care of their eyes. This initiative aimed to prevent vision problems and promote healthy eye habits from a young age.
Nepal: TV Message on Eye Health

Nepal observed World Sight Day with a TV message from the Minister of Health. The broadcast raised awareness about the country’s eye health challenges and encouraged people to get regular eye checkups.
Vietnam: Reviewing Eye Care Projects in the South

In Vietnam, World Sight Day was marked with a visit to the southern provinces of Ca Mau and Dong Thap by Bjorn Stenver, Jop Bruin, and the local team. They reviewed the ongoing 2023-2025 eye care projects and directly visited school screening programs run by Refractionists. They also met patients who had recently undergone surgery. The smiles of these patients were a powerful reminder of the impact of their work and the importance of continued efforts to improve vision care.
