After years of darkness, Polor Wang can safely go outside again

For more than six years, Polor Wang has lived in darkness. He felt powerless and lost in a world that was slowly fading away from him. What began as a cloudy spot before his eyes turned into a blur. Shapes faded. The light disappeared—until nothing remained but darkness.

Blindness takes everything away

For Polor (59) and his family in Laos, his deteriorating vision is a disaster. His blindness robs him of his independence. He can no longer work in the rice fields, and caring for his animals has become almost impossible.
One painful day, while trying to herd his livestock, he heard rustling and footsteps. A thief took one of his animals—the family’s only source of income. Polor heard it happen, but he was unable to intervene.

Worries about the future

At home, his wife is deeply worried. About how they will make ends meet. About his safety. And about their future. In the remote village where Polor lives, there is no eye doctor. A hospital in the city is too far away and too expensive. Without help, he will remain blind.

Help reaches the village

Then the mobile eye care team of the Eye Care Foundation arrives in his village. During an eye screening, the diagnosis is confirmed: advanced cataract. Fortunately, there is hope—surgery is possible.

A short procedure, a new life

The procedure takes less than 15 minutes. When the bandage is removed, Polor squeezes his eyes shut against the bright light. Then he slowly opens them. For the first time in years, he can see shapes again. Colors. Movement. He sees the village. The rice fields. The people around him.

From darkness to hope

“I have been given a new life,” says Polor. After years of darkness, he can safely go outside again. Work again and care for his livestock. Provide for his family and play with his grandchildren. Thanks to our eye care team, Polor received the help he urgently needed. To him, it feels like a journey from darkness to a hopeful future… a journey with a beautiful outlook.

You can give that journey to someone like Polor today. You can provide the cataract surgery that restores sight and ensure that a patient can see a future again.

Will you help give someone like Polor their sight back?
