Surgery Program for Strabismus and Ptosis in Children

22 January 2025

With the hope of bringing light and smiles to children, we collaborated with local hospitals to organize a free surgery program for strabismus and ptosis in children in Ca Mau and Dong Thap. This is not only the first pediatric eye care program we have organized in Vietnam but also an emotional journey where we witnessed incredible efforts and life-changing moments for the children.

SCREENING: EYES FULL OF HOPE

In Ca Mau
From May 27-29, 2024, at Ca Mau Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, we screened 167 children aged 1-15. Among them, 43 children were selected for surgery (24 for strabismus and 19 for ptosis). The unexpectedly high number of patients attending the screening was a pleasant surprise. The local communication system in Ca Mau was highly effective. Once the hospital announced the program, the information was passed down to district and commune officials and quickly reached individual families through community leaders.

In Dong Thap
On May 30-31, 2024, we held screenings at Dong Thap General Hospital. We examined 100 children aged 2-13, and 18 were selected for surgery (8 for strabismus and 10 for ptosis).

These numbers not only reflect the efforts of our screening team but also highlight the urgent need for eye care in remote provinces.

VISITING FAMILIES: UNDERSTANDING THEIR STORIES

Before the treatment phase, we visited families with children suffering from eye conditions.

We met Le Thien Kim, an 8-year-old girl from Thoi Bình district, Ca Mau province. Kim had been living with strabismus since birth, which made her parents worry about her confidence at school. We also met Lu Phuong The Vinh, a boy with ptosis in Ca Mau, who dreams of becoming a police officer to protect his mother battling breast cancer and his younger sister.

We realized that our mission is not only to heal eyes but also to bring hope and confidence to help these children grow into individuals who contribute to their families and society. Their eyes represent the future of the country.

SURGERY: A TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY

Before surgery, the children were admitted for further eye examinations by specialists and necessary tests.

With the support of anesthesiologists and surgeons at Cà Mau Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital and Dong Thap General Hospital, as well as leading pediatric eye care experts, we successfully operated on 42 children in Ca Mau and 17 in Dong Thap.

Dr. Vo Thi Bao Chau shared:
“Strabismus and ptosis not only affect appearance but also pose serious health risks. Parents should pay attention and bring their children for early check-ups to ensure timely treatment. We hope all children will have healthy eyes to study and enjoy life to the fullest.”

HEARTFELT WORDS FROM BENEFICIARIES

Ms. Au Thien Ai, mother of Le Thien Kim, emotionally shared:
“Our family is so happy that my daughter received free surgery, which saved us a lot of money. Thank you to the doctors for bringing such great joy to our family.”

THE HEROES

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the medical team. They are not only experts but also compassionate individuals dedicated to the children.

We also appreciate every team member who worked tirelessly, from organizing and transporting equipment to preparing meals for the children during their treatment.

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES

Our ECF Vietnam team feels proud to contribute to this meaningful journey. We hope that, with everyone’s support, the Eye Care Foundation will continue to bring light to more children.

Every bright eye represents a brighter future waiting ahead.

We will not stop – for the children’s eyes, for their happy smiles!
