A selection of our preliminary results in 2023

Laos

In the mountainous areas of Xieng Khuang and Hua Phan, almost 15,000 adults and children had their eyesight tested. More than 300 people received free eye surgery. Ophthalmologist Cees van der Windt coached the local teams at the beginning of the year. 160 teachers were trained with the help of the ‘eye care in schools’ program. They can now independently perform simple eye examinations on school children.

Cambodia

In addition to the many eye examinations (more than 20,000) and eye operations (1,000 cataract operations), the renovation of the Mondulkiri eye clinic has been completed. Thanks to our donors! Financial support has also been given to research projects by two ophthalmologists from the University of Health Sciences.

Vietnam

One of the many key achievements of 2023 in Vietnam, is the completion of the school eye health protocol which has gradually been applied in all project areas of Ca Mau, Soc Trang, Dong Thap, and Vinh Long provinces. As a result, the ECF partners in Vietnam are more aware of the current situation of the eye care sector and the importance of collaboration between the health and education sectors. Another highlight is the establishment of Vision Centers in Cu Lao Dung and Lap Vo districts of Soc Trang and Dong Thap respectively. With the presence of the VCs, local people can have their eyes checked and buy glasses nearby their home, instead of traveling about 70km to the provincial city.

Nepal

In March we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Himalaya Eye Hospital in Pokhara. Three new primary eye care centers were opened during the year: in the provinces of Baglung, Karnali and Gandaki. The Nepalese team also completed the renovation of the surgical center in Gorkha. The Eye Care Foundation and Social Welfare Council in Nepal renewed and signed The Five Years General Partnership Agreement. With more than 120,000 eye examinations and 1600 cataract operations, we are very proud of these preliminary results.

Tanzania

One of the highlights of our activities in Tanzania this year is the opening of the new Malinyi Eye Unit in the Morogoro region, which will allow the local communities easy access to basic eye care services. Another memorable occasion of 2023, was the free public screening and a surgical camp organized in partnership with the Mlimba council on the occasion of World Sight Day. Throughout the whole year, our team has been conducting orientation of traditional healers in the the Mororo region.
