ECF since 1984 in Nepal

Eye Care Foundation has been active in Nepal since 1984. We started with one eye camp, now Eye Care Foundation has projects in three regions of Nepal: Gandaki, Karnali and Province 1.

How we collaborate in Nepal

At the time, there were very few specialists in Nepal, and many Nepalese travelled to India for cataract surgery. With the Lions Taskforce Blind People as a driving force and financing partner, we started an eye care project in the highly remote area of Karnali. Nowadays, Eye Care Foundation supports two hospitals in Nepal by co-financing the outreach programmes and medical equipment. The programmes of both hospitals entail that regional support is given to eye clinics in remote areas. Some of these small eye care centres have grown into full-fledged eye centres. Eye Care Foundation aids these initiatives on the condition that there is also local support.

Timeline

1986
In 1986, the decision was made to make eye care more sustainable by building an eye care hospital in Pokhara, the second-biggest city in the country.
1993
After sponsorship events in The Netherlands and Japan, the hospital was opened in 1993.
1997
A second hospital in Mechi opened its doors in 1997 and quickly expanded.
2008
The Himalaya Eye Hospital still exists and has been independent since 2008. Since then, this specialised hospital has expanded its eye care services and has trained hundreds of doctors and nursing staff.

Donations make our work possible

Our activities for good eye care are possible through active funding. Eye Care Foundation runs entirely on donations, large and small. Donations make our work possible; without them, these regions have no opportunities for good eye care. We use our donations directly for all our activities.

Our activities are completely clear

Our focus is on improving, preventing and curing. This is what we do:

  • Training local medical personnel and volunteers
  • Setting up field offices for general support and medical management
  • Building eye clinics at easy-to-reach locations
  • Donating medical eye care equipment
  • Financing cataract surgeries
  • Eye exams for elderly and schoolchildren
  • Prescribing eyeglasses
